What you'll make
A shortlist of 5–10 Etsy product niches where demand is real and competition is manageable. You'll have enough confidence to start designing for one of them without guessing.
What you need
- A Claude account
- A general area of interest (e.g. "wall art", "wedding gifts", "pet accessories")
- 30 minutes
Steps
- Start by telling Claude what area you're exploring and ask it to map the sub-niches:
I want to sell on Etsy in the [your area] category. List 10 sub-niches within this category that a new shop could realistically enter. For each one, estimate whether competition is low, medium or high, and whether year-round demand is steady or seasonal. Don't guess exact sales numbers — reason from what you know about Etsy buyer behaviour.
- Pick the 3 sub-niches that sound most promising and ask Claude to dig deeper:
For these 3 sub-niches: [list them]
For each, tell me:
1. What types of products sell (print-on-demand, handmade, digital downloads?)
2. What keywords buyers likely search for
3. What a typical listing gets right or wrong
4. One reason a new shop might struggle to break in
Take the keywords Claude suggests and search them on Etsy. Count how many results come up and look at the top listings. If the top results have under 1,000 reviews and the search returns fewer than 10,000 results, that's a sign competition is manageable.
Ask Claude to help you choose one to start with:
Based on what I've found: [paste your observations — result counts, review counts, gaps you noticed]
Which sub-niche should I start with, and why? What should I list first?
Check your result
- You've verified each shortlisted niche by actually searching on Etsy, not just trusting Claude's suggestions
- You've picked one niche to start with and know what your first 5 listings will be
- You have a list of search keywords to use in your listing titles and tags
If every niche Claude suggests looks overcrowded on Etsy, try a narrower angle — a specific material, occasion or buyer that the broad category doesn't serve well.
